I am sure by now you have heard or even tried Threads by Meta.
What a disaster.
Instead of building on Activity Pub as promised, Meta released a crappy clone of Twitter and wants you to give up all of your information.
Check out the data linked to you when you use threads:
Health and fitness
Purchases
Location
Contacts
SEARCH HISTORY
Identifiers
SENSITIVE INFO
Contact Info
FINANCIAL INFO
User content
BROWSING HISTORY
“Other” data… 🤪
Threads is a privacy NIGHTMARE.
All for the sake of stealing as much of your data and monetizing it, centralizing control for more more more. Never-ending desire for more profits, more data, less privacy.
Enough!
The internet started off as a decentralized body. Then, somewhere along the line Google came around to “organize the world’s information”. The rest as they say is history. More control, fewer hands, data breaches, censorship, walled gardens.
Instead of working together, we are working against.
The thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way. We have protocols that tear down the walls.
Protocols, where if you build something, it benefits me. And if I build something, it benefits you.
The best part? We don’t need to collect ANY data.
Data is no longer digital gold. Data is a liability.
Hacks are inevitable. One breach of Threads will expose everything there is to know about you to who knows who to do who knows what.
The end of walled gardens in communication
I’m calling it now. We are in the early stages of the collapse of walled gardens in communication.
We see the symptoms now - constant fragmentation of social media. Increased violations of privacy. It all comes to a cross-roads and I think the alternative for this vicious data grab is now here.
The alternative:
Does not collect any personal data on you
Does not identify you
Makes any data that you make available worthless on its own
Unites instead of dividing
Breaks down bubbles and walls
Creates massive, unstoppable network effects on a global scale
Allows for transaction of actually sound money
Why should you care?
I share this because I consider you friends. There’s an opportunity here and you are a builder who can capitalize on it. I’m also just raising awareness of options and why the path we’re currently on does not have a good outcome.
I’ve seen some pretty crazy and frankly pathetic excuses from people who defend Twitter’s decisions to kill off the businesses that made Twitter great in the first place thanks to their then-open API. Stockholm syndrome at it’s finest.
Come join me and help me build a future where we are in control of our identities, our speech, our money, and our ability to express ourselves any way we want. A future where our competition makes all of us better off. Where privacy is valued and where we can build out new use cases never before possible.
I will be starting a new project soon that will lay the groundwork for smarter development on the nostr protocol and hope you can join me on my journey 🚀
Cheers!
Gene
God what a nightmare. Definitely won’t be getting on Threads.
I’ve been extra concerned about the amount of data sharing and surveillance of many platforms as of late. Right now I’m struggling with Delta App, which is now owned by eToro. After reading their Privacy Policy, I’ve stopped connecting further accounts.
Can anyone recommend a truly private crypto and traditional brokerage portfolio app to see my financial investment analytics live, and from from one trusted central app?
